Doss doesn't quite succeed in bringing the Utes and their land as alive as Hillerman did for the Navajo. And Charlie Moon's character seems ephemeral compared to those of Jim Chee or the Legendary Lieutenant. That doesn't really matter, though. Moon is primarily a catalyst, a point of connection that links all of the other characters. It's an interesting way to handle the main character in a book, but it works. The Shaman's Game is a fine mystery. To me, the identity of the culprit was certainly a surprise, which is rare. Better yet, the author had left enough clues scattered throughout the story that a reader could have figured it out. No hidden facts that let the detective spring a surprise revelation at the end.

Finally, I can't praise the ending enough. The end of mystery novels either tend to be anti-climatic or a cliched, nearly fatal confrontation with the bad guy. Neither happens here. In The Shaman's Game, Doss left his best work for last. A truly powerful and well-crafted ending.

Each character uniquely contributes to the story. Culture, mystique, and the poetry of our humanness all contribute to an engaging mystery.
I am really enjoying the Charlie Moon series of mysteries. Of course they are compared to Hillerman, but Hillerman takes himself very seriously and in contrast the Charlie Moon stories are often quite funny as well as well-imagined. The Shaman's Game is an earlier effort, and the reviewer R.L. (Philadelphia, PA) is correct in saying that Charlie Moon and his girl friends are just annoying - a shuffling shambling naive 7 foot tall aboriginal Jimmy Stewart who just doesn't understand girls. Yuck. However, the rest of the story is pretty good, an unusual plot, loads of interesting characters, fairly good writing. I've noticed that in his earlier books in this series the author uses foreshadowing far too much, in addition to the embarassing love relationships between Moon and every female who approaches him. Just ignore that, you'll find plenty to enjoy in this book.
Good southwestern book. Be aware one character talks to dead spirits. Not for everyone. Entertaining.
This one wasn't really all that good. I was disappointed in the anti-climactic ending. The story doesn't really get going until 100 pages in, and throughout the book, it just drags on and on. I only recommend if you're trying to read ALL the Charlie Moon books, like I am.
I have read and enjoyed most of this series but I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others it was more about the spiritual aspects than a mystery, or the personal lives of the main characters. But it does have a great surprise ending so I was glad I stuck with it and got there.
I skipped the Charlie Moon bumbling around fragments, these never go anywhere and serve no purpose. This mystery/suspense novel leads you into the heart of the characters with the exception of Scott Parris, who gets a short shift in THE SHAMAN'S GAME, but he is there at the climax.
The battle of wills between Charlie and Aunt Daisy is cunning and unforeseeable right up to the conclusion on the last page. Each character in this thought provoking series grows and expands.
Doss's figurative style provokes images so vivid the reader is right there under the blazing sun taking each step with the dancers.

The clue to these mysteries is found in the title. -- Shaman. This the fourth of the Charlie Moon series. So far this is the weakest. At least Charlie is the co-main character along with the Shaman -- Charlie's elderly aunt Daisy. Scot Parris is now a lesser character as Charlie's lawman brother. In the story nothing ever seems to get done or solved. The reader is left out in the dark. Lots of witch activities. The conclusion just happens as the clues are just too obscure. Yet if you enjoy reading about the "old ways", you can still enjoy the book. I am on to #5.
