The first person story exploring the short life and emotions of Grand Duchess Anastasia is well-done. It is especially compelling when a reader knows from history how the story is likely to end. The details of the life of Anna Anderson, posthumously proven to be a fraud by DNA, is dull. Again, knowing that history would prove her false rendered her self-righteousness about being acknowledged as the youngest daughter of the last tzar unappealing. She cannot be a likable narrator. But the author did a good job with the peak inside the head of a teenage girl in unimaginably cruel circumstances. I would welcome bio-novels on any of the tzar’s children from this author. It was a worthwhile read for a history buff, but is watered down by the story of the imposter.

I was actually expecting super cheesy by the cover, but was overwhelming wrong! The story is pretty much standard Romanov (which I love when authors actually follow) only adding a few "characters". If your a Romanov junkie as I, then I suggest you don't just this book by its cover.
The Epilogue is probably the saddest thing Ihave ever read, which ruined the book for me. Maybe I shouldn't have read it - I definitely cried... Otherwise good book. Don't read epilogue if you read book. TRUST ME. [This review is written by my 10 year old daughter.]
I was rather excited about this book when I bought it and people had given it such great reviews as being very historically accurate. However, I was rather disappointed and felt like the story was only focused on Anastasia's romance with Sasha and not what was happening to Russia during that time period. Also, her obsessiveness about Sasha made her character seem very shallow and a bit selfish to me. It may be that Anastasia did not have much knowledge about what was going on around her, BUT I wish the book had given more specific insight into the events as they were happening.
Wonderful read. The first person account of Anastasia"s tragic life is wonderfully written, very descriptive, and really heart wrenching. It is one of the few books that really describes the family interaction, the relationship between sisters, brother, and parents in a vivid way. You can practically see them in your mind"s eye as you read. Dunlap did a great job.
I have always heard of the Romanov family in Russia's history, but never heard the story about this sad event. It's so heartbreaking when a whole family is murdered, because of a change of government, no matter which country you are in. It would be nice if there was someone on their side who wanted to help them, but who really knows what happened.

I assumed that Anastasia's secret would be more deep than a friendship and romance with a guard. At many points in the story, I found it was very slow. However, at other points I enjoyed the pace.

I very much looked forward to Anastasia and Sasha's meetings. Even though Sasha was rude at certain points, the romance and friendship between them was very believable for me.

Overall, I think Susanne Dunlap wrote the characters very well. By the end of the book I was heartbroken knowing that these were real people that have died. This book has definitely sparked my interest to read more about the Romanov family. Although slow paced in most parts, I am happy I read this book.
The entire time I was reading this book, I found myself wishing I didn't know how it ends. Dunlap wrote a book that had me dreading each turn of the page, and yet I couldn't stop reading.

Everyone knows the story of Anastasia and her family. It's been done many times, and yet this book was different. It took the events and history everyone knows, and added a personal element to it. Dunlap added the thrill of first love and secrecy. It brought the story to life in a whole new way.

The characters have new life as well. It's easy to understand each person and how their actions helped shape the perception the public had of them and the eventual uprising. I loved how Sasha brought the real world to Anastasia and made her think about her life compared to those of everyone else. She goes from being very naive and thinking her life is just like that of the people, only slightly more privileged, to realizing just how wrong she was yet wishing for that life she thought she had. Anastasia really grows through the entire book and I really liked that.

The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the amount of summary that existed in the novel. I understand why it's there, because it's hard to condense 4, almost 5, years into one book, but I wish some of it had been broken up by more interaction with her family and dialogue. Even though there was a lot of summary, I was incredibly grateful Dunlap didn't use too much artistic freedom and rearrange all the events that unfolded just to make it fit. She stuck to the real history, for the most part, and the few things she did change or add didn't impact the novel in any way.

This was a great book about one of, what I consider to be, the most interesting times in European history. It really shows how just a few actions can set off a snowball that ends tragically. I especially enjoyed the ending, even though it is one of the saddest conclusions I've read, simply because you know what happens next, even without being told. For anyone that loves history, this is a fantastic book to read.
