I bought all three books in this series, and this is the first one. I hope the other two are better. The main character is Elizabeth, but not THE Elizabeth. She comes later. This Elizabeth is a neighbor who grew up playing with Henry during their childhood. A large part of the story is not set in England, but in Rome, where Elizabeth and her father spend a lot of time with Michelangelo talking art. It was filler and the story didn't pick up again till it moved back to England. By that time Henry is in love with Anne Boleyn. The ending was strange-- I went back to see what I had missed. I forgot to mention that Elizabeth had a baby, Constance, with Henry before she went to Rome. At the end of the story, Elizabeth, Constance, and several others were being harassed by Anne Boleyn and her bowsmen-- I never knew she had her own army---and in two pages, Constance suddenly was being ferried down to a ship headed for Rome. Simply because she didn't want Anne Boleyn to make her go to court to prove Henry and Elizabeth had had an affair. It was a very bad ending. I'm going to start on the next book today and keep my fingers crossed that it is better.

This read is a interesting "could have happened" in the often repeated stories of King HenryVIII's wives. Well written, a fun diversion from the norm
Historical fiction without some facts is not as convincing.
Really enjoyed the story and would encourage folks that enjoy Tudor history to read it. I'm on Book Two now!
If you love British history You will love this book
This is a fairy story that is beautifully told by an outstanding wordsmith. It is entertaining and, I guess, it accurately depicts the character of the historical personalities that are featured. Not sure that Anne Boleyn was such a witch though. If you are looking for a good read then this is the book for you.
I think the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's completely fiction. An unusual supposition for Henry VIII's sudden antipathy towards Anne Boleyn, I found it an easy read, enjoying it and caring about the characters. But, again, it's total fiction and should not be call a historical novel. I read historical novels to learn about the British monarchy and therefore want facts presented to me in a fictional (i.e. readable) format. Except for Henry VIII really having lived there's virtually nothing historical about it! Read it as a nice beach novel - Easy to get through, but also easy to put down. It won't keep you awake reading all night.
Honestly, so much of this content was made up rather than researched, it was just a book of pure fiction that had real-life characters in it. I do read extensively on the medieval era and this book just didn't make the cut, aside from pure entertainment. In that respect, I would give it 3 stars. History it ain't.
