One Shot Jack Reacher No 9 Lee Child Books
The story about a sizable theft, almost-perfect murders and vigilante justice, the One Shot novel by "Lee Child" is significantly different than Christopher McQuarrie's Jack Reacher (2012). McQuarrie's screenplay was based on Child's novel, but their similarities satisfy expectation as the book and movie compliment each other. Child's book was written like a forensic crime thriller, a literary buffet with a highly-detailed plot, while the movie was pared down to suit average movie audiences. Tom Cruise barely resembles Jack, though Cruise's intention as Jack matches 200%. The movie improves on the book in that the actors and production values play up the well-crafted, dark humor and suspense found in the book. Read the book and watch the movie, they're delicious if you like this sort of thing.Tags : Amazon.com: One Shot (Jack Reacher, No. 9) (9780440241027): Lee Child: Books,Lee Child,One Shot (Jack Reacher, No. 9),Dell,0440241022,General,EspionageIntrigue,Fiction,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Fiction Thrillers General,Thrillers
One Shot Jack Reacher No 9 Lee Child Books Reviews
'One Shot' is a very well written and intense thriller.
I am relatively new to the Jack Reacher series. I began reading it a while back and have been going through the books in order. This is the ninth in the series and is by far the best so far. I have not been nearly as impressed with the others. They were good enough to keep me reading, but far from wowing me. This one is significantly better in many respects. In some of the others, the author had made some technical errors about weapons, etc. as well as having very improbable story lines. I did not find that in this one. The only real error that I found is one that is nonessential. It was simply a matter of Lee Child forgetting something from the earlier books he had written and making a minor contradiction.
For those who are unfamiliar with these books, Jack Reacher is a former U.S. Army military policeman (MP) who is now a drifter and gets involved in various situations where he 'fixes' things. His skill set really does not fit that of an MP. He is portrayed as an expert sniper and commando, neither of which are typical of his former profession. In spite of the farfetched nature of his abilities, Reacher is an interesting and entertaining character.
In this particular book, a sniper has killed five people in a downtown area. All of the evidence, of which there is a lot, points to James Barr. He asks his attorney to get Jack Reacher, which seems inexplicable as they have a very bad history. Reacher ends up coming to try to ensure that Barr is convicted, but something about the evidence troubles him. There are also unknown individuals who try to take Reacher out of the action. All of that leads to his deepening involvement.
This story has several twists and turns and a lot of action. It is entertaining from start to finish. I recommend it.
After watching the Reacher movie several times and seeing several adds for Lee Child's books, I took a look at his website. I was pleased to see so many I just might read. I also was pleased to see them listed in chronological order. I decided that the best strategy for me would be to read them in order. So "One Shot" was the tenth book I read.
There were many differences between the book and the movie. I might have liked the movie better, but I don't think that comparison is fair to either. I liked the 'new' characters and the way Reacher used a totally different set of clues to solve the mystery of James Barr in the book.
There was one paragraph that I noticed that might not have meant a lot to many readers. It had nothing to do with the plot of the book. Just Reacher musing while riding in the back seat of a car traveling through a section on the outskirts of town. It is on page 392 of the 2012 Dell Mass Market Edition paperback. It is the first paragraph after the scene break beginning with "The co-worker lived in a plane...." I agree totally with Reacher's last sentence in the paragraph.
I would like to have given the book it's fifth star, but Child is still suffering a bit from living in the UK so very long.
Can't wait to read others in the series. Mike
Say what you will about Lee Child and his long running Jack Reacher series but he's an author who really knows how to set the hook into his readers. In any of the books within just a few pages Child's got your attention and he's a master of keeping you reading until the end; it's a gift. "One Shot" is the basis for the first of the two Jack Reacher motion pictures featuring the energetic (but woefully miscast) Tom Cruise in the starring role. I'd say about the first 2/3rds of the story are very close to the movie version but the conclusion is quite different. As is typically the case with a screenplay built from a book sacrifices must be made and in this case three female characters don't make it to the big screen. There's the accused gunman's sister, a pretty local TV news reporter, and an old flame of Reacher's from his Army day's who is now a Brigadier General in the JAG Corps. Their presence is hardly critical to the narrative but they each add something with the sister probably the most important and the BG the least.
There's a mass shooting in an Indiana municipal plaza leaving five dead (a number that seems almost quaint in comparison to similar tragedies we see today), seemingly random victims of a madman. The police quickly find a suspect who has left an evidence trail that a blind man could follow. James Barr is a former Army sniper who is quickly apprehended, he isn't talking but the only thing he's said is "Get Jack Reacher". JR soon finds himself in the midwest embroiled in assisting Barr's lawyer who happens to be the daughter of the city DA. Reacher wonders why Barr asked for him, they're not friends and in fact Reacher knows some of Barr's dark past making him a questionable ally for the defense. Naturally things are not as they appear (or it would be a short story) and once JR starts digging he uncovers a complex conspiracy and facing ruthless enemies who think nothing of leaving bodies in their wake.
I enjoyed "One Shot" and happily in this novel Child avoids making any of his usual gaffs in talking about firearms or military issues which was nice for a change. I've already started "The Hard Way" and it's very good.
