Somewhere to Dream The MacDonnell Series Genevieve Graham 9780425265574 Books

I have really enjoyed the previous two books that I have read by Genevieve Graham, so when she asked me to read and review her third book, Somewhere to Dream, I didn’t hesitate. Plus this book is about Adelaide. We first met Adelaide way back in book one. I have to say I’ve been worried about her since then. It was all the more reason to pick up this book. I have enjoyed the previous two books because Graham includes a touch of paranormal in her books.

I really enjoyed reading about Adelaide and Jesse. Adelaide has a lot to work through. She would rather forget what happened to her. She’s been doing alright working through her trauma that way and she isn’t going to change for just anyone. Jesse had a tragic childhood which led to horrible experiences with his father. Both Jesse and Adelaide have some issues and it was great to be able to watch them grow to trust each other and to heal each other. I also loved the inclusion of the Cherokee lifestyle. I enjoyed reading about their day to day and their ceremonies for special occasions. Like Adelaide, I flinched during the parts that were harder to swallow and enjoyed the parts that were peaceful and joyous. I also really enjoyed that we were able to spend time (although limited) with previous characters. Adelaide has visions like her sister Maggie. Unlike Maggie, Adelaide hasn’t embraced her gift. I LOVED the parts of the book that included her visions.

There isn’t much to gripe about in Somewhere to Dream. The only thing that may have detracted from my enjoyment was that because of the the nature of the healing, it felt at times as if the plot was dragging a bit. I do want to stress though that it is entirely understandable. Also it made the pay off at the end that much sweeter!

Somewhere to Dream by Genevieve Graham was an enjoyable read. I will continue to read the stories that Graham puts out and hope that there is a fourth book in the wings!

Somewhere to Dream The MacDonnell Series Genevieve Graham 9780425265574 Books Reviews

Somewhere to Dream is a rich, sweeping story that weaves a fictional love story with American history. Ms. Graham's writing is so descriptive that we feel we are watching a time in history that can be beautiful as well as brutal.

Adelaide's life changed when she was sixteen, a brutal attack on her family left her mother and youngest sister dead and Addy and Maggie at the mercy of evil men until the unthinkable happened and they were rescued by the Tsalagi or Cherokee.

The Cherokee healed the two girls, taught them their language and lessons. The people were in awe of Maggie and her dreams and Maggie took to the people and became Tsalagi in every aspect. It took Addie longer because she always feared the dreams and did not embrace them as Maggie did.

Wah-Li is like a grandmother and taught Addy how to use her gift; they called her, Shadow Girl. But Addy was always impatient with her dreams, there were times she did not finish the dream to find out what happens and unfortunately this led to sorrow but the ways of the Cherokee are intriguing and Soquili finds a soulmate in another warrior and brought him home, a white man named Jesse Black.

Jesse was an angry man, most of his family had been murdered by Indians and although he had to prove himself to the family, he found something in the village that had been missing in his life.

This story is so compelling, the writing and depths of the characters are amazing as we are swept up in the drama that brought me into a different world, the world of the Cherokee. I have not read many American historical books lately, so reading about this era was refreshing. I laughed and thoroughly enjoyed hearing about how the Cherokee lived and embraced their families and cringed at how they treated prisoners, yes life can be brutal and it is hard to read about sometimes.

I enjoyed Addy and Jesse together as they heal one another from their hurtful pasts. Jesse was a bit brash and very prejudice in the beginning, I was not sure I would like him, I thought it would take him a lot longer to acclimate himself with the tribe, but he changed and I enjoyed who he became. The secondary characters are wonderfully written and add much to the story and I like how we get to see Maggie and her family. I also enjoyed learning of Addy's dreams; how she always feared them but then with help she embraced them.

This is the third book in the series but can easily be read as a stand-alone. I am looking forward to more from this author; I enjoy her voice and wonderful storytelling. I recommend this for anyone that enjoys historical fiction with romance.
This book, like Genevieve's two others I've read, is hard to put down once you start reading it. The author writes in a fashion similar to my favorite author, Diana Gabaldon, in that while you are reading you can "see, feel, smell, and hear" what you are reading about. This is historical and romantic fiction at it best AND, in the process of reading, you actually learn something!!!
This is a gripping story of two people who need each other to become whole again, after difficult times. The historical aspects of early American life for both the white settlers and the Native Americans adds a whole new level of interest.
Ms. Graham has a great knack for story telling and I have loved all three books in this series. Good character development, interesting plots & twists, just the right amount of tension. Highly recommend any book by this author.
